Longtime PIC member and vice-president from 2021-2023, Ian passed away on February 13, 2025.
Ian’s love of nature went back to his youth and he spent a lifetime striving to protect it. A lifelong Ottawa native, he often went to Gatineau Park starting in his young teenage years and later took his family on camping excursions in Algonquin Park, passing on his values to his children and grandchildren.
Ian was active in the Green Party and ran as the Green Party of Ontario candidate for Ottawa West in September 1990. In 1993, Ian was involved in the protests against logging old-growth forests in Clayoquot Sound, BC.
An avid observer and photographer of nature, Ian’s collection of pictures on iNaturalist can be seen here. In July 2017, he co-founded the journal The Ecological Citizen.
Ian describes the evolution of his philosophy in his article, “My path to ecocentrism.”
