Following PIC’s April release on New Brunswick’s decision to provide Mifegymiso free of charge under the provincial health plan, and the Alberta and Ontario government’s recent announcements to provide the drug free of charge, we invite PIC members and followers in the rest of Canada to contact their provincial/territorial health ministers and premiers to request they do the same.
The cost of Mifegymiso in Canada (between $300-$450) remains prohibitively high for some women. Some of those who can’t afford the drug will seek a surgical abortion, which is covered by most provincial health care plans (although in some areas the cost of travel to reach a clinic providing abortion services remains a problem). The cost of Mifegymiso to provincial health care services is significantly less than the cost of a surgical abortion. Therefore, coverage of Mifegymiso by provincial health programs would greatly reduce the costs for the provinces of paying for abortions.
The contact information for each provincial and territorial health minister and premier (email, phone and mailing address) is listed below. If you email the Minister of Health, you may simply “cc” the premier on your email so that he/she knows your concern.
Note: We have included contact information for the New Brunswick, Alberta and Ontario governments should PIC members wish to congratulate them on taking the lead in providing Mifegymiso free of charge!
With your help, we may be able to convince other provincial governments and territories to follow suit.
